About John Murrell

John Murrell is one of the most highly regarded and frequently produced of all Canadian playwrights. His work has been translated into more than 15 languages and performed in more than 35 countries around the world.

John Murrell began writing dramatic material for his students when he was a teacher in public schools in Alberta, in the late 1960's and early 1970's. His works for the stage include Memoir, Waiting for the Parade, Democracy, The Faraway Nearby, Farther West, New World, and Death in New Orleans. He is a three-time winner of the Chalmers Canadian Play Award and has also won the Canadian Authors Association Award for Drama, the Writers Guild of Alberta Best Play Award and the Fringe First Award for Outstanding New Writing at the 1998 Edinburgh, Scotland, Fringe Festival.

Murrell is internationally prominent as a translator of classic theatre texts into English, wuth many becoming the "standard versions" for English-language theatres around the world.

Murrell has served in a wide variety of positions, including Literary Advisor to Theatre Calgary and Alberta Theatre Projects, Associate Director of the Stratford Festival of Canada, Co-director of The Banff Centre Playwrights Colony, Head of the Theatre Section of the Canada Council for the Arts, and Artistic Director/Executive Producer of Theatre Arts (including the disciplines of drama, dance, and opera) at The Banff Centre. He has also served on innumerable advisory committees, juries, and boards of directors for artistic and arts-related institutions and industries.

This film celebrates the life of John Murrell - Alberta Playwright, Librettist and Translator for his Governer General of Canada lifetime achievement award. It is an animated poetic look at his life and spirit. Created in conjunction with the National Arts Center and the National Film Board of Canada.

Thank you to the National Film Board of Canada, NFB, for supporting this event! Producer Bonnie Thompson and animator Cam Christiansen will be in attendance.

About Cam Christiansen

Cam is a principal of anlanda digital studio (video animation and design). Named as "Top 40 Under 40" for Calgary Inc magazine 2008, His work has won both national, and international design awards such as “Designer of the year”, Digital Media Association of Alberta 2007 and two Ad Rodeo Awards 2007 and 2004. He has been included in the Venice Biennial of Architecture Exhibition in 1996. He has in the past worked on commercial projects for Critical Mass clients; Dell, Mercedes Benz, and Rolex and has been a Guest Creative Director for Banff New Media Institute 2004.

His Bravo!FACT animated short I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE was official selection to the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL, Toronto International Film Festival, Los Angeles International Film Festival and won numerous awards including notably the 2008 Los Angeles Film festival best animated/experimental short (qualifying for OSCAR contention), TOP TEN CANADIAN SHORT FILMS 2007 (Toronto International Film Festival), 2007 Western Canadian Music Award for VIDEO OF THE YEAR, Alberta Centennial Awards (ACA) 2007 among others. It has also toured the world from Turkey, Japan, Yukon, to North America and Europe.
